Mercedes touched me in turn three on the first lap, I think he could have expected to pass me on the straight with that car, my Ferrari was out of alignment and I was losing ground to Doni. 45 laps alone in Indy, I preferred to quit and watch TV.
Sorry Claudio, I was well on your inside along the white line and you could watch me on your left well before the turn. Internet didn't help too.  Sad

Apologies for the contact Syd. Was it that touch that finished your race?? I was caught in the middle of 3 cars wide at T3 and was trying my best to hold a smooth line  Undecided

Contact started a spin, and then I got collected by a Mercedes, and it ended both of our races. I'd say it was a racing incident. I though we were two wide, and I was leaving enough space on the inside, but we were three wide.
Most of the time I couldn't see the cars around me in turns, so I was going by sound, and did not know Phil was also on the inside.

A very exciting race with overtaking on almost every lap. I wasn't quick enough to hang onto the leading pack and before long I found myself in the second group, battling with Evil, JonnyO, Syd and Fulvio. Alain dropped out of the lead group and joined in the fun but he managed to break the tow and pull away again. After a while Syd and Fulvio dropped out leaving me, Evil and JonnyO to battle to the line. JonnyO put in a fantastic drive to keep the Gordini in the fight. I had an advantage in the Lancia but I couldn't pull away from Evil's Vanwall.

I was watching Pribluda and I could see the leaders catching us and I was hoping we could stay ahead and complete the full distance. But no, they caught us on the back straight on their last lap. I pulled left to let them past but that gave Evil the draught to the line and he beat me by a car length. Unlucky for JonnyO, I don't know if you were planning a last lap dash to the line but if you were you didn't get the chance.

Grats to Hristo on a wonderful pole position, Fastest lap of the Race and a victory.

One of my best races here so far. Together with that epic non-championship race at Reims with F1 65.

I did not had the pace to fight for something more than P5 during the quali, but I had no chance to drive much with slipstream ahead of me. I had few chances for that with Clive, however, I was always catching him before the corners and lost time.

Then I made few vital changes to the setup that gave me more top speed and better corner entry.

During the race I quickly realized that I have a chance for something more. I was faster at lights out than P4 (I believe it was Alain), then started attacking P3 and suddenly I had only Hristo and Enrique ahead of me and I was definitely not slower.

I was able to overtake Enrique, as he had less top speed and started driving together with H, trying to work together with him, so we can cut off the slipstream away from the chasers. That never truly happen though, as Clive Lyoness was able to ride with us. Our team-work though didn't gave him any chance.

And right at the end, Hristo was smarter than me, I started defending and thought I am clear, however, he was able to catch the slip stream from the pack ahead of us and to take P1 just 1 lap before the end. After that it was very hard to do something and Hristo deservedly took the victory.

Grats to Clive on a great podium as well.

Grats to Hristo on a wonderful pole position, Fastest lap of the Race and a victory.

Thanks, Dimi, though it was Clive who got the fastest lap!

What an exciting race, especially the way it finished! Earlier in the day I was unsure whether to go with the regular W196 or the SL, but imagining how it would be very difficult to overtake the SL once it's in front of someone, even if they're faster in the corners, made me go with it instead of the other. My suspicion was proved right during the race!

Qualifying was all about who got the most slipstream, and I got lucky to take pole by just 1 hundred of a second. I don't know how Enrique did it, but his time in the Lancia was incredible, as was his pace during the race too. The best I could do with that car when I tested it yesterday offline was a mid 04...

I had a decent start and stayed in 1st, but it was soon clear that I won't be escaping away and that Enrique is much quicker in the corners. As long as I didn't mess it up though, it was going to be very difficult for him go through, so I wasn't worried too much. After some laps there came a moment where he had a really good run going into T1 and I decided not to contest it, so he took the lead, but lost it on the next straight because of the top speed difference of the SL compared to his Lancia.

Soon after this I noticed another Mercedes SL closing in 3rd place and one of my viewers told me it's Dimi! He eventually overtook Enrique and after that we spent many times working together to try and not impede each other too much. Whenever one of us was attacking, the other would lift up the throttle a little bit so we don't enter the corners side by side. It worked fairly well, though there was one moment where we both lifted up going into T1 lol. I imagine it was quite frustrating for Enrique to not be able to capitalize even from that mistake.

It was such a shame to see him disconnect though, so now it was just myself and Dimi running at the front. With the massive slipstream though, it didn't take long for Clive to join the battle, but again similarly as with Enrique, he couldn't do much about our SLs. I had a moment in one of the laps where Clive was on my inside, in my blind spot, and I didn't dare turn, so taking the outside line allowed Dimi to escape a little bit ahead. Even that was fine though, as the slipstream gradually got me closer to him again.

After about half race distance Dimi switched to driving more defensively and eventually found a way to always remain ahead. As much as I tried, there was just no way to overtake around the outside of corners. The race was almost over and I had just about settled for 2nd, when in the distance I noticed we were catching up to 3 backmarkers fighting together (Phil, Jonny and Evil, apparently). I was still thinking they would benefit Dimi more as he would be catching their slipstream first.

With 2 to go we were at about 300 meters behind them and I could feel the slipstream effect already on the back straight, as Dimi took his defensive line again towards the infield of the track. When we exited T4 to finish the penultimate lap, he again moved left and this gave me exactly what I needed - slipstream from the trio ahead, who were now even closer! I managed to overtake Dimi before T1 and then somehow navigate my way through the 3 drivers ahead as we exited T2!

From there on I just had to keep it clean, as the gap to Dimi seemed sufficient enough. I almost messed up T3, but Dimi did the same it seems, so aI had just enough gap out of T4 to stay ahead until the finish!

Congrats to Dimi for a great race and 2nd place, and Clive for 3rd!

Congratulations to Hristo and Dimi, a very clever race.

For me it was most frustrating, as the corners were always filled with the Bulgarian folk dancing pair.

I couldn't attack one without running into the other!  I was even having to dab the brakes into T1 to avoid hitting them!

Normally the SL would eat its tyres but they were running at a pace that kept them useable.  Running behind them, my tyres were in the green most of the time.

Grats to the Silver Arrows for the podium and top 4 places, It sounds like it was a classic oval/slipstream battle.

TBH I made a late switch to the Vanwall, hoping that it would be a cunning tactical ploy. My offline practice had been with the Lancia and for me it was as fast as the SL, but slightly kinder to the front right tyre. But, I was sure that the big Mercs were going to be popular and that competition for the top places would be very intense, so I chose to save tokens and downsize.
In Qualifying it was clear that as long as I could stay in the slipstream I could easily live with the top speed of the SL after a few gearbox tweaks, plus the setup was keeping that front tyre "in the green". So the plan was to get behind the leading group of Mercs and get towed around for 40+ laps and steal a few points for minimal outlay in tokens.
All that went wrong at the start. I had lengthened 1st and 2nd gears by a click or two just before the start, to protect the engine, but it was too much and I booged down. This allowed Phil and Syd to get past me on the first lap and just slightly impede my progress onto Dimi's exhaust pipes. After 2 laps the gap to the leading pack was too big to close without slipstream and I was locked into a race long battle with Phil. Syd and Fulvio were involved until going 3 wide into T3 I was man in the middle and felt a nudge. It was Syd who then spun out and collected Fulvio.

Jonny then joined the battle and the rest of the race was great fun slipstreaming and passing and re-passing. Alain joined briefly before easing away after the leading quartet.
In the end I collected 5th spot, which was probably absolutely the best I would have got even if I had managed to stay with the leaders on lap 1.
Grats to Jonny who had the Gordini singing and to Phil for some close and fair racing,

Enrique proved the Lancia had the legs to stay in the slipstream of the Mercs but I didn't have the same pace. So after the first lap sorting ourselves out (me, Evil, Syd and Fulvio) I found myself leading the pack and it was down to me to try to latch onto the Mercs ahead. Unfortunately I didn't manage it and Evil's plan was scuppered. However, it turned out to be a great race and as Evil has said, 5th was probably the best he could have hoped for if he had been in the leading group.

Despite Enrique's disco I was very pleased with the servers last night. As usual I ran both the Works and Privateer servers on my home broadband connection and the lag was minimal. I didn't see any warping despite having drivers in several different time zones. Let's hope the internet continues to perform well  Grin

I have just watched Hristo's and Dimi's Twitch feeds and was horrified to see how close I was to Hristo at T2 on his final lap as he came through to lap us.  scared scared

I genuinly thought that I had left plenty of room for H to pass on the inside line, but that must have been a bit twitchy for you when the gap was so small. Fortunately all ended well......oh and thanks for the tow over the finish line to keep me ahead of Phil for 5th place  Wink Wink

you're right Phill, I had a plan for the last lap. But when the leaders arrived, I parked the Gordini on the left side of the opposite straight and let the entire line pass, it wouldn't have made sense to risk the leaders, and I never try to take advantage in these conditions.

In fact, following faster cars in Indianapolis is not a problem, the suction is a little too much in this mod55. I was happy to see Doni run this time. I'm sorry for Farina, leaving due to internet problems is devastating. Congratulations on the podium!!!! Christo is isolating himself in the lead.

LOL I was quite worried going between you guys like that, but I had to take the chance as Dimi was right behind and it was the final lap. Didn't even realize how close we were there either!
