Moderator's Report

This was a pretty good race overall. There was some start of term driving but not that much really considering the size of the field.

I've handed out more penalties than I like to but they were all pretty clear cut in my view.

Congratulations to Knoppy on a fine win in the Cooper.

Lap 1 - The Loop: I. Pollock.

R. Parr brakes for the loop. IP goes for the inside despite being some way behind. At the braking point he's still well behind. He brakes very late and gets alongside but at the expense of getting well out of shape meaning he's not in control of his own destiny. When RP tries to turn in (His two alternatives are to turn in or slide off the track round the outside on the adverse camber) There's an Eagle there. They touch.

Lap one is not the time for on the limit outbraking.

Lap 1 - Big Bend: B Phillips.

HM passes round the outside and is clearly past. BP goes for the inside when Herb brakes but drifts to the centre of the track rather than staying right. They touch and Herb is punted off.

It was an audacious move by HM and BP was probably surprised to see him appear on his left. However, he did leave the door completely open to it and Herb was in front and clear well before the turn in point. Continuing to contest the corner was only going to end in tears.

  • Bernard Phillipspenalty — Failing to give H Moore enough room — 2 places lost

Lap 4 - Big Bend: I Pollock

IP goes off on the outside of Big Bend. He then rejoins and cuts across the track to the pits, taking out several cars in the process.

To his credit IP mailed me and told me about it and I'm happy it was a misjudgement rather than blatant stupidity so the penalty is reduced.

Lap 6 - The 90: S Valen, R Parr

B Darwin and P Villiers are side by side down the straight. SV is on the left and about to be lapped. To be 'helpful' he brakes hard leaving PV absolutely nowhere to go.

PV manages not to hit him. He sees M Wrightson behind him and lets him go through before cutting inside. It would have been fine except...

R Parr sees the incident too late, loses his Lotus big time and hits PV and SV backwards. He had plenty of time to see that there were several cars ahead of him which hadn't been there a couple of corners before. This should always trigger alarm bells. He was under no pressure from behind. By the time he decided the track was blocked and he should slow down it was too late.

This was a completely avoidable incident. Because I'm a nice bloke I'm reducing the penalty to 1 place due to the unusual nature of what was happening ahead.

  • Roger Parrpenalty — Lack of care approaching an incident — 1 place lost
  • Sean Valenwarning — Practically stopping on track

Lap 7 - The 90: I Fawcett

SV goes a little wide in the 90. IF goes for the inside but is travelling too fast to keep a tight line, drifts out and hits SV.

It doesn't matter if you're lapping someone it's still your responsibility to pass cleanly.

  • Ian Fawcettpenalty — Rear ending S Valen — 2 places lost

Lap 16 - The Pits: A Davis

Rear ending someone in the pitlane is a Cardinal sin really. You know there are going to be stationary cars there and you're supposed to be taking care.

  • Allan Davispenalty — Rear ending J. Bardsley — 2 places lost

Lap 19 - The Loop: A Davis

On the run up to the Loop H Moore loses speed running on the grass. P Villiers outbrakes him into the Loop and AD tries to do the same.

At the turn in point AD is not alongside and HM quite legitimately turns in. They touch and HM is knocked wide. At this point HM was well up to speed so that's not a mitigating factor.

If you're not "substantially alongside" at the turn in point of the corner it's not your corner and you must tuck in behind. The problem is that by that time it's too late.

As a general rule if you're not at all alongside before the braking point then you're unlikely to make it so should pull out. In this case AD is still more than a car's length back at that point.

  • Allan Davispenalty — Overambitious overtake — 2 places lost

Lap 23 - The Loop: N Richard

Much the same as AD's incident. NR is some distance behind M Wrightson at the turn-in point but MW drifted a little wide. In an attempt to go through on the inside NR goes too deep into the corner, drifts wide and hits MW.

If someone goes wide it is legitimate to go through on the inside but it's your responsibility to do it without hitting them. The going wide mitigates the penalty to 1 place.

Lap 28 - The Loop: R Yalland

RY overtakes B Darwin on the straight up to the Loop. It's a nice clean move and he gives BD plenty of space. Unfortunately he then cuts back across onto the racing line on the exit too soon giving BD nowhere to go.

RY is past BD when he cuts back, but not enough. To safely cut back in front of another car you should have at least a car's length clearance to allow for warp. In practice this means you should be able to clearly see them in your mirror. Even then it's not advised if you're coming into a heavy braking zone.

If RY had stayed on the inside line they'd both have got round and it would have been a textbook move. Alas...

  • Richie Yallandpenalty — Not giving enough room — 2 places lost

Lap 30 - Big Bend: T Simpson

A combination of driving too close to allow for the guy in front to make a slight mistake and warp. The warp means it's mitigated to a warning.

Lap 33 - The 90: P Villiers - Rear Ending R Parr. Racing Incident.

RP has just had a big accident at the Speed Trap and has Shift-R'ed. PV is behind him coming into the 90 and has left plenty of room but RP brakes much harder than usual. PV didn't have a chance.

R Parr: if you reset on the last lap you still have to do a stop go. There's no excuse at WG because the s/f line is after the pit exit.

  • Roger Parr — Failing to Stop and Go after Shift-R — 15.000 seconds added

Moderator's Report

Well. I expected more to do than this at Mexico.

Congratulations to Allan Davis on the win.

Lap 6 - The Hairpin

MW brakes a little late into the hairpin and just slightly nudges J. Bardsley. JB catches it and carries on MW comes to a complete halt and N. Richard following can't avoid hitting him.

MW should have been more careful following another car into the hairpin. This is a marginal incident though and I don't think a penalty is appropriate.

Lap 11 - Peralta

S. Valen has spun to the inside of Peralta. C. Loynes avoids him and in doing so slows slightly but stays to the inside.

BP is following and tries to go round the outside but never leaves anywhere near enough space and hits CL. BP spins out and CL carries on.

An attempt at an opportunist pass was quite legitimate but there was acres of space to go round the outside. Granted, Peralta is a fast, banked corner but there's plenty of grip up the banking and no need to keep tight to the inside.

Because only BP suffers from the incident I've mitigated the penalty to one place.

  • Bernard Phillipspenalty — Not giving C. Loynes enough room — 1 place lost

Lap 17 - Turn 3

NR stops on the track to retire at the entry to the chicane. Ben Summers Tries to avoid him but touches him on the way round and spins out.

If you're going to retire, get off the track first. On the racing line on the entry to a corner is not the place to do stop. Even if your engine blows you have plenty of momentum to get off the track.

Moderator's Report

An excellent race, especially at the front. Not as clean as Mexico though. Hopefully that's not a trend.

Lap 1 - Crowthorne

Vic Flores is careful into turn one and brakes possibly a touch earlier than Ben expects, but in no way excessively so for the first corner. BS has left plenty of room behind VF but spoils it by not reacting, the gap is gone in a second and he hits VF.

The cars behind do well to minimise the impact of the incident.

Lap 1 - Clubhouse

M. Knoppy makes a move down the inside of V. Flores. He is alongside at the turn in point but just touches the kerb which slows him. VF gives some room but not enough, touches MK's rear wheel and spins out.

MK was comfortably alongside at the turn in point then made a slight mistake. If the mistake had been due to braking too late it would have been different but it was due to a slight misjudgement of line. VF allowed for him being there and left some room but not quite enough to allow for the mistake.

50:50 racing incident in my opinion.

Lap 2 - The Esses

M. Knoppy is following V. Flores into the Esses. Midway though the chicane VF starts warping in and out of view making this a little difficult. VF's car suddenly seems to jump from side to side and slow. MK tries to slow but doesn't have much chance.

Racing Incident - pure warp/clock smash. No fault to either driver.

Lap 9 - Crowthorne

MW is the last of a chain of three Coopers down the main straight, D. Wilkinson and A. Davis being the others.

DW brakes early to avoid rear ending AD and MW dives down the inside. He brakes very late and manages to also get alongside AD at the turn in point. Because he braked so late MW can't keep tight to the corner. AD turns in and hits MW's rear wheel.

MW was overambitious to attempt a double overtaking manoeuvre under braking into a difficult off camber corner. He was always going to be forced to drift wide on the exit, potentially blocking the corner for the following cars.

However. The fact that MW was in front of AD and in control of his car when AD hit him mitigates the incident in my view. It was overambitious but in my opinion he just about got away with it. It was lucky though and MW should heed the warning.

When AD rejoined he drove straight across the track to the apex of the corner, forcing N. Richard to brake. No damage was done in this case but it was dangerous and you should always stay off the racing line until back up to a reasonable racing speed.

  • Allan Daviswarning — Bad Rejoin — also, 1 place lost for penalty points
  • Mike Wrightsonwarning — Ambitious Overtake

Lap 10 - The Pitlane

A. Wallace comes into the pits at speed and slams into M. Wrightson who is taking a stop-go, knocking him over the wall and onto the track.

AW hit MW at over 80 MPH. In the pits. It should never come as a massive surprise to find a car stopped in the pits so you need to take extra care. That means go slower or even stop if necessary.

There's space on the left if you want to go past people.

MW showed considerable presence of mind to quickly drive forward off the racing line before resetting. Good driving.

Lap 16 - The Esses

MW is following I. Pollock out of Clubhouse. IP brakes for the Esses and MW hits him. Classic case of driving too close.

  • Mike Wrightsonpenalty — Rear ending I. Pollock — 2 places lost

Lap 19 - S/F Straight

NR is following A. Davis out of the kink and up the hill. He has the draft and is closing. At the last millisecond he realises he is going to touch AD's car and pulls to the left. AD is knocked to the right but holds it and both drivers manage to continue.

NR tries to hold the outside line round Crowthorne forcing AD to hold the inside. Mid corner NR gets too close again and spins trying to avoid impact.

I would urge NR to re-read the driving guidelines linked from the Website. As a general rule of thumb if you can't see the track between you and the car in front then you're too close.

If AD hadn't come out of the incident in front then this would have been a penalty.

Lap 20 - Sunset

HM goes wide on the exit of Jukskei, losing speed on the grass. M. Knopp is following and gets a run round the outside into Sunset. He goes round the outside to leave room for HM.

HM rejoins but leaves his braking too late into Sunset and goes straight on, taking MK out.

This is a warning rather than a penalty because in my opinion it was more a case of HM losing control in the heat of the moment rather than a badly judged manoeuvre.

At a high speed point such as this though even a slight off can lose you a significant amount of speed and you need to take great care rejoining.

Lap 22 - Crowthorne

A. Davis is leading DW into Crowthorne but leaves his braking late and is forced into a wide entry.

DW sees him go wide and makes a move for the inside but AD recovers and moves back onto the line. DW hits his left rear wheel and AD spins out. DW continues.

In mitigation is the fact that after the mistake AD could have stayed wide but when he moved back across he was still clearly in front so the corner was still his. Even if he had though DW was relying on there being no warp mid corner and would have been heading for Barbeque two wide which is always a recipe for trouble.

DW as the overtaking driver has the responsibility not to hit the car in front. by putting himself where he did he was relying on AD not retaking the line, despite the fact that AD had no idea of DW's position.

When AD made the mistake it was legitimate for DW to try and gain advantage through it but it was quickly clear that he was starting from too far back to get inside before the corner. DW at no point had any sort of overlap before AD moved back across and throughout the incident had a clear view of AD's position.

A hard decision to make because of it's effect on the result but judging the incident in isolation in my view it has to be a penalty.

And finally...

Moderator's Report

I am not a happy bunny.

This is the second race in a row I've had to take a win away from someone. It's not something I've ever had to do before this season and I don't want to do it again. A win gained through knocking the guy in front off the track is meaningless anyway.

It's quite simply the result of overaggressive driving. The incidents themselves might seem minor when looked at in isolation but if you watch the replays and see some of the near misses where people are getting out of the way to avoid being hit by a car on the ragged edge behind them...

There's no malicious intent in any of these incidents. No one's deliberately trying to push anyone off the track but if you make a slight mistake while driving up someone's gearbox through every corner you're not giving yourself any leeway to make a mistake.

GPL is difficult. It's easy to forget that sometimes when we're doing laptimes comparable to Clark and Hill but this isn't real life. In some ways it's more difficult. Clark and Hill didn't have to contend with warp or clock smashes or not seeing all the cars.

It's acceptable to follow someone closely and try and force a mistake, show yourself in their mirrors, distract them. There's a fine line though between what's acceptable and intimidation and I'd like to reign things in before it reaches that stage.

The crux is - respect other driver's right to be where they are. It's only a game but that doesn't mean people don't take it seriously enough to spend a great deal of time practising.

I would like all division 4 drivers to re-read the driving guidelines section on the website. Please pay particular attention to, well, all of it. It's the GPL racing etiquette bible.

Unfortunately only the last 10 laps were on the replay due to an undocumented feature of GEM+. If I ever get hold of the bastard who wrote that I'll...

Lap 1 - Station Hairpin

V. Flores braked early enough but didn't slow enough for the hairpin and went straight on. He touched I. Pollock's right rear which pushed him into A. Straw and span him round, blocking the track and causing complete carnage.

This was a warp, pure and simple. Immediately after the impact F's car jumped back a foot on the replay so GPL had predicted him being further forward than he actually was. He was taking care but sometimes at Monaco shit happens.

Racing incident

Lap 7 - Gasworks Hairpin

DW is following A. Davis into the hairpin. He was baulked very slightly by AD and takes a wide line round the corner but before he can recover NR hits him up the rear.

Basically NR put his foot down before DW did. There's no excuse for that. You need patience when following another car. You can't put your foot down before the guy in front of you does.

Both drivers considered this a racing incident. I don't.

Lap 27 - Gasworks Hairpin

On the run down to the hairpin RY moves over to let B. Philips past. Under braking BP gets a bit sideways but recovers. In recovering he slid slightly wide before turning in.

RY goes for the gap on the inside but it's an illusion and it closes almost as soon as it appears when BP turns in.

AW is following. When BP hits RY his car stops suddenly. This is right on the periphery of AWs vision but he should be alive to the possibility of an incident when two cars are battling in front. In the event he rear ends RY. Because of the sudden way RY stops I'm reducing the penalty to one place but there's no real excuse for hitting him. These cars will stop dead if you leave the brake pedal down...

At Monaco someone has to make a monumental mistake to create a genuine passing opportunity. Sliding a bit wide at the hairpin isn't enough here. Even taking into account BPs late turn in RY had no overlap. If he was trying to avoid him then the inside is not the place to look. Because of RY's mistake I'm reducing the penalty to one place.

Moderator's Report

Much better. A penalty free race this time, and a good one.

Congratulations to Michael Wrightson on an excellent win and bad luck to Alan Wallace who he beat by to the line by less than a second.

There were however some near misses. People are still sticking their snouts into gaps like truffle hounds and a couple of people nearly got their noses burnt on hot exhausts when overtaking. Calmer and more controlled please Gentlemen.

Spa next and there are two drivers who have accumulated enough penalties that they get an automatic one race ban. N. Richard and R. Yalland will not be racing at Spa.

Moderator's Report

What a good race. Congratulations to Allan Davis on an excellent win after a dramatic last lap move on Alan Wallace. He won by .303 seconds and Dave Wilkinson was only just over 2 seconds back.

Lap 1 - Ben Summers

Ben touched B. Phillips' overturned Ferrari and is forced to reset but doesn't take a stop go.

No fault means someone else hits you. Running into an incident is definitely not no fault.

Moderator's Report

Two in a row for Allan Davis and a bad race for Dave Wilkinson makes the top of Division 4 look a lot more interesting than it did before Spa.

The race got caught up in the server grid problems and it was a tight, three wide grid. Everyone did superbly to avoid any incidents off the line.

Lap 1 - Turn 2

Herb has a habit of spending the first lap of races sniffing for gaps. This time the guy he was sniffing at, M. Wrightson, braked a little earlier than he expected, he was forced to brake hard, lost it, R. Parr behind couldn't avoid him and all three of them ended up on the grass.

HM took a stop go at the end of the lap which I'm taking into account in mitigation.

  • Herb Moorewarning — Lack of care on first lap

Lap 1 - Exit of Scierie.

DW spins on the exit of Scierie. He waits for a number of cars to pass but then spin turns right in front of H. Moore.

DW took a stop go as he passed the pits which I'm happy is sufficient punishment as it wasn't so much a bad rejoin as bad timing due to limited visibility.

Lap 5 - Turn 7.

I'll let Clive explain:

"On lap five I went off having been deafened by Berny's Ferrari, finding myself in the wrong gear and approaching T7L from the wrong direction. Then my troubles really started."

"When I came to rest the rear of the car was out in the traffic so I moved forwards and turned left to run down the side of the track. The car had other ideas and slewed round so that I was now facing across the track. This at least gave me a view of the oncoming traffic but not too good as my own wheel blocked most of it."

"Plan B was to drive across the track to the relative safety of the inside of the corner, off the racing line. Just started to go when I heard a car and waited to allow a Honda go past. The track looked clear so I then tried to get across but made a complete Horlicks of it as the thing swapped ends on me."

"Unfortunatly as I turned I could then hear another car coming and was now stranded in the middle of the track without any view of which way to go to improve things so I sat there like a frightened rabbit and hoped."

"It transpired to be Dave Wilkinson, who had nowhere to go and the impact put me upsidedown. I then did a Shift R, at least put me where I was trying to get to, and took a SnG at the end of the lap."

IMO CL, like Dave himself earlier tried to keep out of people's way but simply got it wrong.

Moderator's Report

Allan Davis completes a hat-trick of wins to take the lead in the championship. Dave Wilkinson's second place makes it very interesting indeed going into the last race at Goodwood.

Lap 16 - Stowe

RP in a Ferrari follows PV down Hangar Straight. PV in the slower Cooper stays to the right to force him to go round the outside. He doesn't weave or swerve so it's a legitimate defensive tactic.

RP doesn't take a wide enough line into Stowe and touches PV's left rear as he turns in.

It was only a light touch but given that RP had the whole of the straight to line up the corner and could see PV throughout it was careless to hit him.

In the event, PV carried on OK and RP span off. This implies a slight element of warp in the actual contact but RP should have taken a wider line to allow for that possibility.

Because it was only RP who suffered and the slight warp the penalty is mitigated to one place.

  • Roger Parrpenalty — Rear ending P. Villiers — 1 place lost

Lap 18 - Woodcote

AW spins at Woodcote and is safely off the line on the outside. He Shift-R's and goes to take his stop-go.

Unfortunately to do so he had to go almost straight across the track. C. Loynes couldn't possibly avoid him.

Cutting straight across the track in the middle of the fastest corner on the circuit, for whatever reason is a no no. AW could easily have rejoined at the outside and done another lap.

Lap 23 - Abbey

Ben Summers decides his Cooper will go round Abbey far better if he turns it the other way up. J. Bardsley is leading MW approaching Abbey. JB sees the yellow flag and eases off, in doing so drifting partially onto the grass. MW does not ease off (check the laptimes) and powers past JB on the straight.

There is no overtaking between a yellow flag and the next green flag. MW passed the green flag a few inches from his left hand side just after he'd passed JB. That's the rule. Ask Valentino Rossi.

  • Mike Wrightsonpenalty — Overtaking under yellow flags — 1 place lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

A slightly disappointing end to the season because of the server problems. We did manage to get everyone onto the server but there was a higher than usual attrition rate.

I don't think it affected the outcome of the championship though. Dave Wilkinson drove a perfect race to win from pole and take the championship. The quality of field he beat this season is illustrated by the fact that 1:17.27 was only good enough for 5th on the grid.

Heartiest congratulations to Dave. A deserving champion.

Lap 1 - Madgwick

M. Dawkins ran too deep into Madgwick and was forced to brake hard to avoid hitting P. Villiers. In doing so he ran a little too far right, put a wheel on the grass and span to the inside. C. Loynes following got side swiped.

First corner you have to give space for the pack to bunch up in front of you. You mustn't put yourself into a situation where you're panic braking.

Having said that the contact with CL was because he put a wheel on the grass and was unfortunate to spin as violently as he did. Hence a warning this time rather than a penalty.

  • Mike Dawkinswarning — Overagressive driving on the first lap

Lap 2 - The Chicane

N. Richards is following D. Wilkinson into the chicane. DW takes the entry a bit too tight and his front right touches the wall. By this point NR is committed. He can't slow any faster than he already is and nudges DW through the corner.

If the driver in front essentially stops in the entry to the chicane at Goodwood you have nowhere to go. NR did extremely well to limit the damage. Neither driver suffered and they continued on.

Racing Incident

Lap 5 - Lavant

RY is chasing P. Villiers. Thay're having a grand old battle. RY's making himself big in PV's mirrors and having a look at every opportunity but PV's having none of it and stays ahead.

RY gets a slightly better exit from St. Mary's. Coming into the first part of Lavant he has a look down the inside and sticks his nose in. There's no chance whatsoever of him getting alongside before turn-in and he tries to come out of it. PV's aware that he's somewhere there and does his best to leave room but there's contact and PV is spun out.

Lavant is not an overtaking point unless the driver in front has made an error out of St. Mary's, which PV didn't. It's a great pity as it was a good dice up to that point and I was enjoying it.

  • Richie Yallandpenalty — Overambitious Overtake/Rear Ender — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Lap 7 - Moss' nemesis right hander before St. Mary's

AD is following NR through the fast right hander before St. Mary's. NR's car twitches to the right and he loses speed. AD is following too closely to react and hits him. They both spin out.

In mitigation, NR did slow suddenly mid corner at a very fast part of the circuit, though AD should have allowed himself a little more space to react.

AD quickly resets and drives off into St. Mary's as M. Wrightson is approaching the corner. AD's sudden appearance forces him to take a wide line through the left hander and he has to take to the grass.

AD should have waited for the field to clear. He was too impatient to get back onto the track and make up the time he'd lost and in doing so nearly messed up MW's race.

Neither incident is in itself worth a penalty in my view but the two together are worth the warning. AD was in too much of a hurry to get going again in an extremely difficult braking zone.

  • Allan Daviswarning — Rear ending N. Richard/Bad rejoin — also, 2 places lost for penalty points
