Lap 13 Turn 1 - Nathan Wald and Phil Thornton

Nathan Wald is chasing Phil Thornton down to T1. He is quite a long way back, certainly not close enough to expect to pass. Phil brakes as he normally does, rather early, but Nat brakes much later, meaning that he closes right up in the braking zone. Phil seems to have a very small wobble right at the end, which means he slows a bit more than expected and runs slightly wide. Nat sees a small gap down the inside and tries to squeeze into it, but his speed pushes the car wide and he runs into the back of Phil.

I think that this was a combination of an opportunistic pass and going into the corner too hot in the first place. Had Phil maintained his normal speed round the corner this would not have happened, but drivers need to leave a little bit in reserve when following another car as they may make a small error mid corner. Because of Phil's wobble I've reduced the penalty by one place.

  • Nathan Waldpenalty — Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

Moderator's Report

Summary

Only one incident required moderating but it involved most of the field.

Lap 1 - Virage de la Gare

Potentially I could penalise several drivers for a variety of offences, but all of the incidents were to a large extent made far more likely by the unusual circumstances. With 2 drivers up the front who would normally be further back, the field got compressed at the hairpin, and a small tap from behind triggered a chain reaction that took out half the field.

Some drivers appear to show little care extracting themselves from the mess, but client replays show that they had a very different view of events, and are therefore absolved of blame.

Given the rather large element of doubt in all this, I propose to put the whole thing down to an unfortunate set if circumstances, and therefore I will not issue any penalties to individual drivers.

The only comment I would like to make is to ask all drivers to pause for a moment after a pile up occurs before trying to drive off. This should give the server and clients a chance to work out where everyone is and so avoid the problem of invisible cars approaching from behind, as happened in this case.

Moderator's Report

Just one incident of note.

Lap 1 Turn 2 John Bradbury, Steve Smith

John Bradbury has gone too deep at T1 and up the bank. He rejoins carefully round the outside as a number of cars go past, and is accelerating when he gets a wheel just slightly on the verge, which pulls the car to the middle of the track. Steve Smith is alongside and also towards the middle of the track, and unfortunately they tangle and take each other off.

The question here is whether John was up to racing speed, since the rules say that rejoining drivers should not interfere with other drivers until they are up to racing speed. In this case John was at least as fast as Steve, so I feel he was entitled to his half of the track. The move right was effectively a loss of control, caused by his desire to leave room on the right (which should be commended) so I am calling this a racing incident.
