Moderator's Report

Another dominant win from Will Tway and a well deserved second place for Mike Wrightson in another Honda. Robert Burton grabbed the final podium place in his Ferrari relegating Diki Waza's Honda to fourth place and scuppering Honda's chance of a podium white wash.

Note: When submitting incident reports please enter the replay time and lap number as it makes it much easier to identify the incidents.

Server replay time: 0h01m00s

Lap 1 - Esses - Diki Waza and Robert Burton

Diki and Burt are fighting for position and neither driver wants to give way. As they round the right hander Diki is on the outside and warp contact is made causing him to spin out.

This is just a case of competitive driving with warp intervening. In this situation the car on the outside is always at risk of warp (see rules for warp on UKGPL web site). Burt did nothing wrong, he was entitled to fight for the place and he maintained a good tight line (in fact his wide line through the first part of the Esses, the left hander, was exemplary). Diki did nothing wrong either but it would have been safer for him to give Burt a little more room so reducing the risk of warp contact.

Server replay time: 0h01m02s

Lap 1 - Esses - Graham Poole, James Andrew, Colin Paxton and Jack O'Ferrall

Graham puts a tyre on the grass and he looses control slewing the car across the track in front of James who was powerless to avoid contact. Colin and Jack are also caught up in the melee.

James is entitled to a no fault shift R.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h28m50s

Lap 25 - Front Straight - Steve Bird and Jack O'Ferrall

Steve is recovering after an incident and reset at the Esses and is building up speed on the Front Straight. Jack is on full throttle as he exits the Esses and closes fast on Steve. Steve is in the middle of the track when he sees Jack and he tries to get out of the way. Jack has to make a snap decision on which side to overtake. Unfortunately both drivers move to the right and contact is made.

It would be very harsh to penalize Steve too much on this occasion as he clearly tried to keep out of the way although he should not have drifted towards the middle of the track. Steve should have stayed well right and near the edge of the track whilst he built up to racing speed after rejoining.

  • b_1_rd (Steve Bird67)advice — Advice - Stay well off the racing line while building up to racing speeds

Server replay time: 0h29m09s

Lap 25 - Front Straight - Steve Bird and Will Tway

After the shunt with Jack, Steve comes to rest on the edge of the track which happens to be the racing line. Will is approaching flat out at 173 MPH, he doesn't have time to see Steve and take avoiding action. Will clips the Eagle and his Honda is sent spinning across the track. Fortunately Will's car is undamaged and he can continue.

Steve was not at fault here, he didn't intend for his car to come to rest in such a dangerous place. However, having found himself in such a position, the best thing for Steve to do was too quickly select reverse and clear the track before contemplating a rejoin.

After the shunt with Will, Steve makes a couple of efforts to rejoin the race and to his credit pulls off the track when a freight train looms large in his mirrors. Unfortunately for Steve, this was a particularly dangerous place to have to re-join. The racing line was right on the edge of the track and what is more it is one of the fastest sections in the entire lap, just before the braking zone for the Loop. There are 2 ways to avoid a risky rejoin here. The first one is to rely on Pribluda which should provide the driver with enough information to select a decent gap in which to rejoin. The other way is to simply trundle down the grass verge to a point where the racing line is nearer the other side of the track and join there. In this case the nearest safe joining point is halfway round the Loop. Instead Steve retires the Eagle apparently having decided a rejoin is too risky.

Yes Burt, you're right.  You can drive anything you like but in your case if you take the Lotus you'd have to do a stop and go.  The rules are explained on the championship page but I've updated the announcement to avoid confusion.

My first race with the league and I really want to apologise to everyone.

I do have a kind of mental block with Watkins Glen and can't find a rhythm on it for some reason but honestly, tonight, if you were on the track and I DIDN'T ruin at least one of your laps, (if not the race), you were lucky.

I was well aware of how poorly I was driving and was so eager to make sure I let people through that I was going dangerously slowly at some points. Just not thinking clearly.

I crashed into a spinner in the Esses after making a blinding start and then seemed to hit every barrier around the track at some point. With ten laps left I think my engine overheated or something - not sure - but I lost drive. I shift-r'd but when I crashed again not long later I figured that if this were real, I'd have been out on the first lap and by staying on track I was only risking taking out a front-runner. I therefore pulled into the pits and retired myself.

As I said above, I'm really sorry to have got in everyone's way. Hopefully you saw the funny side of an Eagle in a different crash site every lap!

Set the right ammount of fuel this time... well, nearly  Roll Eyes

After spending practice trying desperately to get into some kind of rhythm, wound up 3rd on the grid.  Got a decent start and had to endure the incredibly twitchy phase again as the tyres warmed up.  One of the aforementioned twitches allowed Robert through  Cheesy

As the car started to feel like a car again, I pressed on and passed Bernie when he spun off, Rik at the top of the esses and Rob when he blew his engine!

Rik kept me awake after that, never dropping more than 2 seconds back and near the end Will had had an off and was right in front of me going into the last 2 laps.  Pushed like hell to keep the pressure on, but halfway round the last lap it started spluttering and I nursed it over the line 2nd  Grin  Unlucky that Rik had a graphics issue that forced his retirement Sad he was heading for 3rd place.

Team Backwards moves forwards!

Didn't enjoy that at all.  The car felt all over the place. I made as far as 4th without overtaking anyone, then screwed up in the esses.  Shift R'd on a clear track but as I was trying to get going had a bunch of guys coming up fast and wanted to get out the way so made a dash for the inside.  Sadly Dave had the same idea and flew into the back of my slow car, so trashed his race too no doubt, then was trying to recover from that and was at the edge of the track and I think it was Will that I clipped so probably scuppered his race too. At that point it was either hit escape and cool down or put the PC through the window!

Sorry for wrecking the race for you guys.

Welcome to Clubman's James.  Don't worry about the race- Clubman's is for 67 beginners and we're happy to have more drivers on the grid.  Since Watkins is so short it punishes you for errors, and with a few drivers racing it can seem that you're being lapped every thirty seconds, which is also frustrating.  You made a good start, you were unlucky.

Wish I could get up to 4th in Clubmans when the car isn't right Steve!  There hadn't been any yellows to warn me, so when I turned out of the esses I wasn't sure what had happened.  You seemed to be in the middle of the road and I wondered if you had control of the car, for a split-second you seemed to be crossing to the left so I went right- then you came back.  I hit the brakes but I couldn't get the speed down enough... though you might be better off if you continue to accelerate, if the situation happens again?  It's only approaching the corner that you have to show yourself in the mirrors to a car going past you, whereas when you're slow in front of faster cars they might need all the space possible.

REED's Clubmans debutant Sam had a good race, ahead of me on the grid and by a few seconds at the end.  With any luck he shouldn't be so much faster than me and Ian that we can't get in each others way though...  Bell will be apoplectic, always good news, but we don't want these TBR chaps stealing our garage!

Well Mike, I think we both set the exact same fuel loads. I noticed the pressure dropping with 3 or so to go and wasn't sure I'd even make it to the end. I did my best to conserve gas but you were gaining on me so fast, I had to keep on the throttle. I think I finished with 22psi.  I wondered where you went after the loop....

I also want to say that if anybody thinks they're getting in the way...YOUR NOT. This is what Clubman's is all about. Even if you crash and burn....keep plugging away....don't quit. Hell my first season I took out the pole sitter at Albi about 5 feet after the flag dropped. I nearly packed it in but everyone was very understanding. That's what makes this league special.

Also, Clive Loynes wrote a great article over the weekend about on-line racing and overtaking. If you haven't read it...check it out here....

Grats to Mike for putting another Honda on the podium and to Burt for coming back after having engine failure.

Cheers,

Will

Hi Mike,

For what it's worth...I use a nifty program called Digital Display Modifier. It allows folks with bad eyes, like myself, to easily see oil pressure, fuel pressure, speed etc. You can adjust the font to your liking.

Link if your interested....

That race was eventful to say the least. My pace was reasonable but my setup allowed no room for error and as a result I spun out a few too many times. I had to coast the last lap as I was running out of fuel but 6th place isn't so bad. I look forward to racing at Mexico.

My first race with the league and I really want to apologise to everyone.

I should apologise to you for wrecking the start of your race at the Essess.

Dont worry about getting in the way, it happens sometimes, and anyway it gives the better drivers something to think about!
