To try and ensure maximum enjoyment for most people I shall be racing that night at Goodwood (offline)
Paul, Its a fun race - drivers of all abilities are welcome & probably good practice before the official league races begin.

Paul, as Billy says it's all for fun. You may find you are not far behind some of the other novice drivers. These races are normally well supported by a wide variety of the regular drivers giving a much better spread of abilities compared to the fun races you have tried so far where it was mostly the more experienced and faster drivers that turned up.
I think you may find this more encouraging with some closer competition for you. Try and get some practise in before next week and you'll soon start getting more speed with some track time under your belt.

Nothing beats the experience gained from actual races, so don't miss the opportunity.

Paul, link as promised. These were recommended as default setups some years ago. They are quite soft and stable so they may be useful as a good starting point. Try them out, if you don't like them don't feel obliged to use them but they may help. http://speedsnap.co.uk/zip/65_setups.zipgood luck

Recognize your current limit and drive within it, even if it's slower and frustrating. I know I said you should go as fast as you can and keep restarting so you can improve rapidly, but that's for offline practice - it does no good in races. In order to gain racing experience the opposite applies there - it's mostly to do with improving consistency and looking after the car (engine, clutch, tires). So... ignore everyone else during the race, at least emotionally, seek to find your own rhythm and stick to it once you achieve that. Takes time to sink in, usually a couple of laps.

Okey doke. Thanks for the advice - I can run (reasonably comfortably) at about 1:32 so that should give me about six laps on my own before I see the dreaded blue flags.

You don't really have to do much when you see Blue Flags. Just holding your line and not making sudden moves is usually enough. If you want to let someone through easily you could lift up slightly when they're going around you on a straight or sacrifice a corner exit by keeping the inside and letting the rest go by on the ideal line. Depends where you get caught. In any case, don't let getting lapped get to you and accept it as something you'd have to do forever... I see some people who see themselves as backmarkers rather than racers and it's a wrong mentality IMO.

Paul remember to mount the gravel tires Just kidding. As Hristo says, you gain more experience from an actual race than hotlapping forever. Ciao

My main issue is that sometimes in trying to be helpful I end up spinning so I will just have to hold my line and let you guys deal with it

To quote Aragorn from LOTR TTT "Show no mercy, for you will not get any!". Just kidding, but it's racing - your interests come first, so don't sacrifice your race for others if not absolutely necessary.
