Season 36 - Stirling Moss Memorial Race 1 – Aintree

This is the first of two races to commemorate the life and career of Sir Stirling Moss. Commonly recognised as the greatest driver never to win the world championship.

This race is at Aintree, located in the outskirts of Liverpool in the north of England. Where Stirling Moss, driving a Mercedes, won his first British Grand Prix in 1955.  After a race of 90 laps, Stirling finished in a time of 3h 7m 21.2s, just 0.2 seconds head of his illustrious Argentine teammate Juan Manuel Fangio. Mercedes dominated the race with a 1–2–3–4 finish with Karl Kling and Piero Taruffi driving the other two Mercedes cars. The first British driver / British car victory in a British Grand Prix was also at Aintree in 1957, when Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks shared a Vanwall.

There will be a free car choice for this event. The faster drivers are not restricted to the slower cars and they are free to take a Mercedes-Benz W196 if they wish. This will increase the likelihood of a Mercedes-Benz lockout of the podium as in the real race but we are not expecting drivers to emulate the 90 lap race distance!

This is a Non-Championship race, so unlimited free Shift-Rs are allowed. There is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

Not sure about the British car bit.  Wasn't that Tony Brooks in the Connaught?

Tony Brookes won 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix in a Connaught, which was the first time a British driver had won any Grand Prix in a British car. He beat the works Maserati team on their home ground.

Sorry Phil, I didn't read it properly.  In fact I had stopped reading at the British driver/ British car point.   oops

But you couldn't call him a gentleman!  ;-p

I'm hoping to take part in this but we have a Tesco order being delivered between eight and nine.  Just hope that they are not running late!

I don't know who was driving #16 Lancia as contact in the last corner lead to my getting a CTD.  Suffice to say that your driving is shameful and an utter disgrace to the memory of SSM.  Sad

Congratulations to Yannick, I tried very hard to stay with him but didn't have the brakes to go any faster.

Don't think that I had a single "off" so that was encouraging.  And it made a nice change not to be looking at Evil's exhaust pipes!

RIP Stirling.

Grats to Yannick and the podium. Clive in his reserved 2nd place  Roll Eyes and a great drive by Phil to bring it in 3rd.
It was tempting to take something with more poke, like the Maserati or Lancia...maybe even the Connaught?  lol.  I have rarely even driven the Mercs or Ferraris, so did not even have a working setup knowledge to start from.

Then I thought I would give Clive a chance of glory, because deep down I am a gentleman  Roll Eyes Wink and I actually  had a moment where I felt sorry for him  scooter, so I chose the Vanwall as the appropriate car for a tribute to Stirling at Aintree.

I could not anticipate that Yannick would spoil Clive's day lol and set some great times in the 250F  Shocked.  I was struggling with my intention to try and get the Vanwall on to the podium if I could, but finally towards the end of qualifying I was beginning to find some pace and technique to make the Vanwall competitive(ish).
So, we lined up on the grid with Yannick on pole and a couple of Mercs threatening to use their power. The lack of grunt in the Vanwall was exposed off the grid and Fulvio outdragged me to T1 in his Merc. But I was at least in touch with the leaders until...…as I exited Anchor my PC had a massive glitch...the screen froze momentarily and the FF spiked through the wheel. Apologies for the chaos guys, but there was nothing I could do and I headed for the grass, to get out of the way, as soon as I regained some control over my controls!!

I rejoined dead last, which was not part of the game plan! and then suffered another glitch about a lap later. After that I was able to set about chasing down the field and I had some great racing with Doni in the Connaught. Sorry for the bump Doni when the 2 cars ahead spun at Anchor and I just could not slow any more of turn tighter to avoid the touch. Later I caught Axel in his Lancia and chased him for many laps and later when we caught Fulvio I could see 4th place. But there were two very fast cars in the way lol.
Axel ran wide and I was able to slip through and focus on Fulvio's Silver Arrow and when he made a mistake I took the chance and fired the Vanwall up to 4th place.
Hopes of a podium were very distant at that point because Yannick, Clive and Phil were just too far ahead and there were too few laps left to even attempt chasing them. More important was to keep things tidy, ahead of Fulvio and hold on to 4th place lol.

Great fun guys...on to Goodwood and the 65's  thumbup2

@Doni

Sorry, this nasty #16 Lancia was me...

Clive chased me to the limit when you were ahead, so I tried the little door you left open to slip through,
but you seemed not to have seen what was happening behind you and cut to the inside where I allready was.

Again sorry for that CTD but I had no intention to hurt you  Embarrassed

god, that was hard work and a felt like a really long race!, decent start, avoided everyone, few off's here and there, considering I only practiced yesterday and got it all working again, but I did managed to get my laptimes down in race from a 2:10s down to a personal best on last lap of a 2:05, putting me only 4-5secs of the leaders!

Here's the gplra report if anyone wants to look at it.

Ah...  Only after pulling down the server replay cap have I seen that it was Axel in the #16 Lancia.  My initial post was only moments after the CTD and I was rather furious at the result.  All forgiven, amigo, but...

I have to say that my participation in races at Aintree has come to a close.  I drive clean and respect 'track limits'.  That means not carving off gobs of time by short-coursing some corners by using the grass verges.  The Melling Crossing complex is a particular sore point as most put four wheels off the road to straighten out the road.  I mean, c'mon!

From the server replay cap, the GPLRA report of 'On Track' laps...

Driver                           Laps/Total    Percent
Phil Thornton55                     (16/23)      69.57
Clive Loynes55                      (13/23)      56.52
Robert Burton55                      (8/22)      36.36
Fran55 Molteni                       (6/10)      60.00
 Doni55                               (2/2)     100.00
Yannick Verheijen                    (2/23)       8.69
Bastian Grupp                         (1/7)      14.29
Axel Cookie                          (1/17)       5.88
Fulvio Policardi-55                  (0/23)       0.00
Andreas Gebhardt                     (0/23)       0.00
E vil55                              (0/23)       0.00

...as gleaned from the Practice session...
The latter figure is the total laps run.  The former figure those which registered a '64' in GPLRA.  That is, 'Off Track'.
Driver                           Laps/Total
Phil Thornton55                  10/13
Clive Loynes55                   05/12
Robert Burton55                  02/04
Fran55 Molteni                   05/13
 Doni55                          00/04
Yannick Verheijen                08/08
Bastian Grupp                    00/00
Axel Cookie                      08/14
Fulvio Policardi-55              03/05
Andreas Gebhardt                 09/10
E vil55                          07/13

I mean, why don't you care?  Sad

As a policy decision, I will no longer compete at Aintree.
