The 1967 Sports Cars Extra present a rather different challenge to the light and nimble Grand Prix cars. They are larger and heavier but are equiped with massive engines delivering lots of power. Whilst drivers of all abilities are welcome it is expected that entrants will be reasonably adept at handling the more forgiving 65 cars before attempting to master these heavy machines. The final championship positions will be determined after each driver has discarded their worst two results.
The cars are divided up into 5 groups. There is a ranking point associated with each group. Each driver must select two cars at the start of the season. The choices must be declared in the race post for round 1 (or the first round they compete in). For Professional drivers, the combined ranking points for the cars should amount to at least 6 points. For Amateur drivers, the combined ranking points for the cars should amount to at least 5 points. The car with the higher rank points must be used at least as many times as the car with the lower rank points.
Group I | Group II | Group III | Group IV | Group V |
Chaparral 2F | Chaparral 2D | Ford GT40 MK IIb | Porsche 910-B | Ford GT40 MK I |
| Lola T70 MK III | Ford GT40 MK IV | Alfa Romeo T33 | |
| Ferrari 330 P4 | Mirage M1 | | |
Group | Rank Points |
I | 1 |
II | 2 |
III | 3 |
IV | 4 |
V | 5 |
For example a Professional driver who chooses an Chaparral 2F (Group I) must also use the Ford GT40 MK I (Group V). The Ford GT40 MK I must be used at least as many times as the Chaparral 2F. If a Professional driver chooses a Ferrari 330 P4 then he could also use either a Porsche 910-B or an Alfa Romeo T33 and if he didn't mind the additional ranking point, a Ford GT40 MK I.
An Amateur driver could choose a combination of Lola T70 MK III and a Mirage M1 (a Group II car and a Group III car which amounts to 5 ranking points), provided the Mirage M1 was used at least as many times as the Lola T70 MK III.
