The 1968 F1 Early cars are new and consequently their relative performance is a little unknown. Consequently any attempt to devise a handicap system is fraught with difficulties. However it is possible to divide the cars into four groups, each group containing cars of similar performance. In this championship each race will feature the cars from a specific group. There will be two races for each group. Drivers will be allowed a free choice but they cannot use the same car twice. The final championship positions will be determined after each driver has discarded their worst result.
Group I | Group II | Group III | Group IV |
Ferrari 312 | Honda RA301 | McLaren M5A | BRM P261 V12 |
Lotus 49/49b | Eagle T1G | BRM P126/P133 | Brabham BT24 |
Brabham BT26 | Honda RA302 | Matra MS11 | Brabham BT20 |
McLaren M7A | Matra MS10 | Cooper T86b | Brabham BT23B |
For example a driver who chooses the Ferrari 312 in the first Group I race must drive either the Lotus 49/49b, Brabham BT26 or McLaren M7A in the second Group I race.
